There is a particular kind of story that doesn’t rely on spectacle to leave an impression, but instead lingers because of the questions it asks long after it ends.

These are stories that use time not simply as a mechanic or narrative device, but as a lens through which to examine something far more human - memory, identity, and, most of all, love.

I have always found myself returning to them.

From Final Fantasy VIII and its exploration of time compression and memory erosion, to Interstellar and its framing of love as something that can transcend dimensions, there is a shared philosophical thread running through these works. They are not really about time travel in the conventional sense, but about what happens to human connection when time itself becomes unstable, unreliable, or even irrelevant.

At the centre of all of them sits a deceptively simple question: What does love mean when it cannot change the outcome?

Living in a Story That’s Already Written

In most narratives, time is treated as a linear progression…a sequence of cause and effect where choices lead to consequences, and where characters grow by shaping the future through their actions.

However, the stories that have always resonated most with me tend to reject this structure entirely, instead presenting time as something closer to a closed system, where the beginning and the end coexist, and where events unfold less as a result of choice and more as an expression of inevitability.

Films like Arrival approach this idea through the viewers perception, suggesting that once time is understood non-linearly, the concept of “choice” begins to shift. Rather than asking what will happen next, the narrative asks whether knowing what will happen changes anything at all.

Similarly, Steins Gate explores the tension between determinism and resistance, where attempts to alter the timeline only reinforce the very outcomes the characters are trying to avoid.

In Final Fantasy VIII, this idea reaches its most abstract form through time compression, where past, present, and future collapse into a singular point. What is fascinating about this is not the spectacle of the concept itself, but what it implies: if all moments exist simultaneously, then the future is not something that can be shaped - it is something that is already there, waiting to be experienced.

This reframes choice entirely, and suggests that our actions do not create outcomes, but instead, simply reveal them.

When Love Doesn’t Change the Ending

If time in these stories represents inevitability, then love often emerges as the one force that refuses to be reduced to logic.

What makes works like Your Name or Clannad: After Story so emotionally resonant is not that their characters succeed in overcoming fate, but that they continue to reach for one another even when doing so appears irrational, or even futile. The emotional weight of these stories comes from the tension between what the characters know - or come to understand - and what they choose to do anyway.

In Interstellar, Cooper’s journey is not driven by certainty, but by conviction. He cannot fully comprehend how his actions will resolve, nor whether they will change anything at all, and yet he acts as though they matter.

In Final Fantasy VIII, Squall’s arc is defined not by his understanding of time compression, but by his refusal to retreat from connection, even when faced with the possibility that everything is already decided.

This is what gives love its thematic power in these narratives. It is not presented as a tool to alter fate, but as a response to it. Love becomes an act of defiance - not against time itself, but against the meaning that time imposes.

The Cost of Becoming Something Else

One of the most compelling through-lines across these works is the relationship between memory and identity, particularly when memory begins to erode under the weight of power or circumstance.

In Final Fantasy VIII, the use of Guardian Forces introduces a quiet but devastating consequence: the gradual loss of memory. This is not treated as a central plot twist, but as an underlying cost that subtly reshapes the characters’ sense of self.

Similarly, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind explores the deliberate erasure of memory as a means of escaping pain, only to reveal that it is precisely those memories that give relationships their meaning.

In Erased, memory becomes the thread that allows the protagonist to navigate time itself, anchoring his identity across shifting realities.

Across all of these stories, memory is not just a record of the past, but the foundation of who we are. When it begins to fracture, so too does the self.

This raises an unsettling question: if you lose the memories that define your relationships, do those relationships still exist in any meaningful way? Or does identity itself become something fluid, shaped not by continuity, but by whatever fragments remain?

The Desire to Escape Time

If the natural response to time is acceptance, and the human response is defiance, then there exists a third path that many of these stories explore - rejection.

At a certain point, the burden of time becomes too great. Time creates distance, and distance creates longing; time creates change, and change creates loss. It is, in many ways, the root of suffering. The idea that everything we love is temporary is not just a philosophical observation, but an emotional reality that these stories confront directly.

This is where many of their antagonists emerge, not as embodiments of evil, but as individuals who have reached a different conclusion about how to resolve that suffering. Rather than accepting time or resisting it, they seek to eliminate it entirely - to collapse all moments into one, to remove distance, to erase the possibility of loss.

However, what these narratives consistently suggest is that removing time also removes the very conditions that give life meaning. Without change, there is no growth; without distance, there is no longing; without an ending, there is no value to what comes before it.

In attempting to escape time, these characters often end up erasing the very thing they were trying to preserve.

The Sorceress at the End of Time

It is within this philosophical space that my next graphic novel series - The Sorceress at the End of Time - sits.

Rather than treating time as a puzzle to be solved, the story approaches it as an emotional and thematic constant - something that shapes its characters in fundamentally different ways.

At its core, the narrative is built around three contrasting perspectives: one that sees connection as a risk best avoided, one that embraces it despite the cost, and one that has lived long enough to see time itself as the true source of suffering.

These are not just character traits, but distinct ideological positions. Each represents a different answer to the same underlying question:

If destiny cannot be changed, do the choices we make still matter?

The story does not attempt to resolve this question through mechanics or exposition, but through the trajectories of its characters - how they respond to inevitability, how they relate to one another, and ultimately, what they are willing to sacrifice.

So… Do Our Choices Matter?

What these stories suggest, collectively, is that the answer depends on how we define meaning.

If we expect our choices to change the outcome, then perhaps they do not matter as much as we would hope. But if we understand meaning as something derived from experience rather than result, then choice takes on a different significance entirely.

You may not be able to alter where the story ends. You may not be able to rewrite what is coming.

But you can decide how you move toward it.

You can choose to love, even when you know it may end.
You can choose to stay, even when leaving would be easier.
You can choose to reach for something, even when it may already be slipping away.

And perhaps that is what gives these stories their enduring power. Not the illusion that fate can be changed, but the insistence that, even within its boundaries, our choices still define who we are.

Final Thought

There is a tendency to view determinism as something that diminishes meaning, as though a fixed future renders everything insignificant. But these stories argue the opposite - that inevitability does not erase meaning, but sharpens it.

If every moment is already there, waiting to be experienced, then the act of choosing - of feeling, of connecting, of holding on - becomes more significant, not less.

Because it is no longer about changing what happens.

It is about choosing to live it.

Love, Fear, and Human Connection in Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion is often described as a psychological deconstruction of the mecha genre.

While its surface narrative focuses on giant bio-mechanical weapons and apocalyptic threats, many have noted that its true subject is human emotion.

And I agree.

More specifically, Evangelion explores how people seek love and connection while simultaneously fearing the vulnerability such closeness requires.

Rather than portraying love as a healing force, the series presents it as a source of anxiety, conflict, and emotional risk. Through its characters and its central philosophical ideas, Evangelion argues that human relationships are shaped not only by desire for intimacy, but by trauma, fear of rejection, and the instinct to protect oneself from pain.

Love: A Psychological Need

From a psychological perspective, human beings possess a fundamental need for connection.

Attachment theory suggests that early experiences of care shape how individuals approach relationships later in life. Secure attachment fosters trust and openness, while insecure attachment often leads to fear of abandonment, avoidance of closeness, or emotional volatility.

In Evangelion, nearly every major character displays patterns consistent with insecure attachment.

Shinji seeks approval and reassurance but withdraws when intimacy becomes possible.

Asuka craves attention and admiration yet reacts aggressively to emotional vulnerability.

Misato substitutes physical closeness for emotional openness.

Rei struggles to understand intimacy at all due to her fractured sense of identity.

These patterns reflect how individuals who associate love with loss or pain often pursue connection while unconsciously sabotaging it.

Love - in Evangelion - is a psychological survival strategy.

The Fear of Emotional Exposure

A recurring theme in the series is the terror of being truly seen.

To be emotionally close to another person requires revealing weakness, insecurity, and personal history. For characters shaped by trauma, this exposure feels dangerous.

Rejection becomes not merely painful, but threatening to one’s sense of worth.

This fear explains why moments of tenderness in Evangelion are frequently followed by withdrawal or conflict. Characters approach intimacy, experience emotional discomfort, and then retreat to regain a sense of control.

Rather than moving steadily toward connection, relationships oscillate between closeness and distance.

This pattern reflects real-world psychological behaviour in individuals who desire love but fear vulnerability.

The Hedgehog’s Dilemma as a Model of Relationships

Early in the series, Evangelion introduces the philosophical concept known as the Hedgehog’s Dilemma.

Hedgehogs seek warmth by huddling together, but their sharp spines cause pain when they get too close. Humans, likewise, need emotional closeness yet hurt each other through misunderstandings, insecurities, and defensive behaviours.

This metaphor serves as the emotional framework of the series. Every major relationship follows the same cycle:

• desire for closeness

• emotional pain

• withdrawal

• renewed loneliness

Evangelion does not present this cycle as failure of character. It presents it as an inherent tension of human connection.

Love involves risk.
Risk invites pain.
Yet isolation brings emotional emptiness.

A ever-ending cycle of loneliness.

Instrumentality and the Fantasy of Pain-Free Love

(This section contains spoilers).

The Human Instrumentality Project represents the ultimate escape from relational suffering.

By merging all human consciousness into a single collective existence, individuality disappears. Without separation, there can be no rejection, misunderstanding, or loneliness.

From a psychological standpoint, Instrumentality reflects an extreme avoidance strategy. It is the desire to eliminate vulnerability by eliminating the self as a separate emotional being.

Rather than learning to tolerate the discomfort of relationships, Instrumentality offers a world without emotional boundaries at all.

The series presents this as seductive, but ultimately hollow.

Connection without individuality lacks meaning. Love without vulnerability lacks human authenticity.

The Exposure of love

Many narratives portray love as something that fixes emotional wounds. Evangelion challenges this assumption.

The series suggests that relationships do not automatically heal trauma. Instead, they often bring unresolved pain to the surface. Intimacy magnifies insecurities before growth can occur.

This is consistent with psychological research showing that close relationships frequently activate attachment fears, especially in individuals with histories of emotional neglect or loss.

And Evangelion portrays this process honestly:

People push away those they care about most. They misinterpret affection as threat. They retreat when they feel emotionally overwhelmed.

Rather than idealising romance, the series portrays connection as difficult, unstable, and deeply human.

The Series’ Position on Human Connection

Despite its bleak portrayal of relationships, Evangelion does not advocate isolation. Instead, it argues that pain is inseparable from genuine connection.

To live alongside others means risking rejection, misunderstanding, and emotional suffering. Yet without connection, the self gradually erodes into loneliness and meaninglessness.

The series ultimately suggests, rather positively in fact, that imperfect relationships are preferable to emotional emptiness. Vulnerability is the cost of being human. Pain is not a sign of failure, but of engagement with life.

Conclusion

To Evangelion, love is courage.

Courage to be seen.
Courage to be hurt.
Courage to continue seeking connection despite fear.

By framing relationships through psychological realism rather than romantic idealism, the series offers a deeply resonant portrayal of human intimacy. Its characters reflect real emotional struggles shaped by trauma, insecurity, and longing.

In doing so, Evangelion delivers a powerful message far beyond God-like mechs and the end of the world:

Human connection is painful, fragile, and uncertain, yet it remains essential to identity and meaning.

To love is not to be safe.
It is messy. Intrusive. Disgusting.

It is to be alive.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is often remembered as a story about physical deformity and social cruelty…but that reputation understates its ambition and vision.

Beneath its gothic imagery lies one of Disney’s most unsettling examinations of power, righteousness, and the ease with which moral authority can disguise violence.

Through Frollo, the story draws a bold line between those feared for their appearance and those never questioned because they seem moral, revealing how harm takes root when outward virtue goes unexamined.

The Moral Camouflage of Frollo

The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, first published by Victor Hugo in 1831, is often remembered for its imagery: the twisted bell ringer silhouetted against cathedral stone, the roaring crowd below, the firelight and shadow that seem to breathe through Paris itself. Yet beneath its gothic spectacle lies a far more unsettling concern. The novel, and later its most famous animated adaptation, is less interested in physical monstrosity than in how societies decide who deserves that label.

At the centre of this question stands Frollo.

Unlike Quasimodo, whose body marks him as other in the eyes of the city, Frollo appears immaculate by comparison. He is learned, disciplined, and outwardly pious, a man entrusted with moral and institutional authority. The danger he represents does not arise from chaos or savagery, but from order. Frollo believes himself righteous, and it is this belief that allows him to commit acts of cruelty without ever recognising them as such.

In Hugo’s novel, Frollo is a scholar-priest whose fear of disorder gradually curdles into obsession. In Disney’s adaptation, that fear is reframed through the lens of state power, transforming him into a judge whose authority is enforced by law rather than scripture alone.

The shift is significant, but the core remains the same. Frollo does not experience his actions as moral failings - he experiences them as necessary corrections to a sinful world.

The Justification of Desire

What separates Frollo from more conventional Disney villains, is that he does not revel in evil, nor does he ever name it as such.

Instead, the film consistently frames his actions as acts of displacement. His desire is treated as an external corruption rather than something that originates within him, and his obsession with Esmeralda is recast as a moral trial, one in which she, rather than he, must be punished.

At every turn, the film shows him avoiding the one act that might interrupt this cycle: looking inward and accepting responsibility for what he wants.

The Hellfire sequence in Disney’s adaptation makes this internal logic explicit. Frollo does not deny his desire; he denies responsibility for it. He casts himself as a passive participant in his own corruption, pleading for purification while demanding punishment for the object of his fixation.

What’s most disturbing about this is not the desire itself, which the film correctly treats as fundamentally human, but the refusal to accept it as such.

Frollo would rather see the world burn than admit that the darkness he fears resides within him.

Quasimodo and the Inversion of Monstrosity

This stands in stark contrast to Quasimodo.

Where Frollo’s identity is constructed through repression and projection, Quasimodo’s is shaped by vulnerability. He has been taught to see himself as a monster, and initially accepts that judgment without question. Yet his actions consistently undermine it. He shows compassion where it is not required, restraint where violence would be justified, and, crucially, the capacity to let go.

The relationship between the two is therefore not simply one of master and servant, but of inverted moral trajectories. Quasimodo’s arc is one of painful humanisation. Frollo’s is one of gradual self-dehumanisation.

Quasimodo learns to love without expectation; Frollo convinces himself that loving someone grants him authority over them. This distinction becomes clearest in their respective responses to Esmeralda.

Quasimodo’s affection is defined by protecting her - he risks his life for her safety, even when it means relinquishing the possibility of being loved in return. Frollo, by contrast, treats rejection as an injustice. When his desire is denied, annihilation becomes acceptable. His fixation escalates not because he loves too deeply, but because he cannot conceive of love without control.

Here the story draws its most decisive line between man and monster. Humanity, in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, is not measured by purity or righteousness, but by the ability to accept limits. To recognise another person as autonomous. To endure desire without allowing it to metastasise into entitlement.

Where Quasimodo’s succeeds, Frollo fails on every count.

The Collapse of a Lie

What makes Frollo endure as a villain is how recognisable this failure is.

He is not an outsider to the system; he is its enforcer. His monstrosity is not a deviation from social order, but an expression of its darkest potential. He demonstrates how easily morality becomes cruelty when it is stripped of humility, and how power that lacks accountability, begins to mistake itself for divine will.

When Frollo falls, the film allows his actions to speak for themselves. There is no final speech, no moral reckoning offered by the world around him. His authority fails him, and his certainty does not save him. He is undone by the same violence he has spent the film justifying.

The bells of Notre Dame ring on. Quasimodo remains, battered but human, while the man who believed himself pure disappears into the fire below.

Hugo’s Frollo vs Disney Frollo

Hugo’s Frollo is, in many ways, more tragic and more insidious. His descent unfolds slowly, rooted in intellectual arrogance and fear of disorder. He believes knowledge itself should impose control over the world, and when it fails to do so, he responds with obsession and violence. His monstrosity feels inevitable, the result of years spent mistaking repression for virtue.

Disney’s Frollo is sharper, colder, and more immediate. By removing the priesthood and elevating him to a judge, the film positions his authority as explicitly political. His actions are sanctioned not just by personal belief, but by the machinery of the state.

This makes him less inwardly conflicted, but more frightening in scale. Where Hugo’s Frollo corrodes himself from the inside, Disney’s version weaponises ideology and law to impose his corruption outwardly.

Both, however, share the same moral failure. Neither can accept that their desires are human, and neither can survive the idea that righteousness might require restraint.

Man and Monster in Aglow

This distinction between outward monstrosity and inward corruption runs directly through my latest graphic novel series, AGLOW.

Much like The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Aglow is not ultimately concerned with whether its characters flirt with darkness, but with how they relate to it. The series consistently asks whether power, grief, and desire are confronted honestly, or whether they are justified through narratives of necessity and protection.

What separates characters like Lila from figures such as Frollo is not innocence, but awareness. Where Frollo refuses to look inward, Aglow insists on that confrontation. It treats the abyss not as something external to be destroyed, but as something internal that must be acknowledged and integrated, at great personal cost.

In this sense, Aglow extends Hugo’s question rather than answers it. It suggests that monstrosity is not a state one falls into, but a series of choices made while convincing oneself they are unavoidable. To be human, then, is not to be free of darkness, but to recognise it without letting it justify harm.

If Frollo represents the comfort of believing righteousness absolves responsibility, Aglow is concerned with the cost of refusing that comfort, and attempting to remain human anyway.

A Story That Begins After the End

Final Fantasy VIII unfolds as though its conclusion already exists, shaping events long before the characters themselves become aware of it.

From the opening moments, the player is presented not with prophecy or destiny explicitly stated, but with an emotional aftermath we’re not yet aware of.

Squall begins the story withdrawn, isolated, and resistant to connection. He is competent, disciplined, and capable - yet fundamentally disengaged, framed as his very state of being.

As the narrative develops, these traits reveal themselves as consequences rather than personality quirks. Squall’s detachment stems from childhood abandonment, compounded by memory erosion linked to Guardian Forces. His emotional distance is not a defence he consciously chose, but rather a condition formed before he had the capacity to choose otherwise. His present behaviour is already the result of a past he cannot fully remember.

This pattern - consequence preceding awareness - recurs throughout the game.

Meaning in Final Fantasy VIII is revealed retroactively rather than prospectively. The orphanage revelation does not redirect the story forward; it reframes everything that has already occurred. Scenes once understood as spontaneous or coincidental are revealed to have been necessary steps within a closed causal loop. The characters do not gain new freedom from this knowledge. They gain belated understanding.

From early on, Final Fantasy VIII positions us - the player - as someone uncovering a path that has already been walked.

This framing gives rise to the game’s central philosophical question:

If destiny cannot be changed, does choice still matter?

Fate Is a Condition of Reality

In Final Fantasy VIII, fate is not personified by a god, prophecy, or singular antagonist. It does not announce itself with spectacle or moral absolutism. Instead, it is embedded persistently in the systems that govern the world.

Sorceress power is inherited rather than chosen. Edea becomes a sorceress without consent, and Rinoa later inherits that same power through circumstance rather than intention. Neither actively seeks the role, and neither is given the option to refuse it. The position persists across generations, indifferent to individual desire, binding each successor into a historical chain they did not initiate.

Guardian Forces operate under a similar logic. They grant extraordinary power, but exact a cost that is neither immediate nor dramatic: memory. The more the characters rely on these forces, the less access they retain to their own pasts. Identity becomes fragmented, shaped by necessity rather than continuity. Characters quite literally sacrifice self-knowledge in order to function within the world.

The orphanage revelation crystallises this worldview. The characters discover that their lives are bound by a temporal loop: future actions influenced past events, which in turn shaped the present. There is no clear point of origin. No moment where the loop could have been broken cleanly.

Fate, in Final Fantasy VIII, is not something imposed from outside.

It is the framework within which existence unfolds.

The Narrow Scope of Choice

Although the player exercises significant agency at the mechanical level - junction systems, combat strategies, character optimisation - narrative choice is tightly constrained.

Squall does not choose his emotional detachment; it is the product of early loss and suppressed memory. Rinoa does not seek sorceress power; it is thrust upon her through proximity and circumstance. Even SeeD itself is structured to recruit children into military roles they barely understand, reinforcing cycles of duty rather than self-determination.

The assassination mission against Edea illustrates this constraint with particular clarity. Squall believes he is acting decisively, participating in a plan designed to stop a looming threat. Only later does he learn that Edea herself - influenced by future events - enabled the very mission meant to oppose her.

What appeared to be choice is revealed to be maintenance of the timeline.

The Outcome is fixed. Unchangeable.

Choice exists, but only within boundaries that do not permit deviation from fate’s structure. The game repeatedly presents decisions that feel meaningful in the moment, only to later reveal that their significance lay not in altering events, but in sustaining the world as it already is.

Emotional Choice in a Deterministic World

Where Final Fantasy VIII most clearly preserves the relevance of choice is not in altering events, but choices driven by emotion.

The game repeatedly places characters in situations where outcomes are already constrained, yet foregrounds the decision of how they respond internally. These choices do not change fate, but they determine whether characters participate fully in their lives or retreat from them.

Early in the narrative, Squall treats emotional distance as a survival strategy. He follows orders efficiently, fulfils his role as SeeD, and later accepts the position of commander with minimal resistance - but also with minimal investment. Leadership is treated as obligation rather than connection, another role imposed upon him rather than something he actively embraces.

This detachment is not framed as strength or stoicism. Instead, it isolates Squall from meaning. He functions effectively, but without orientation toward anything beyond duty.

A significant shift occurs when Rinoa falls into a coma after being possessed by Ultimecia. Squall cannot fix her condition, undo her involvement, or halt the larger forces at work. He is confronted with the limits of action in stark terms.

What he can choose is whether to disengage emotionally or remain present.

His decision to stay with Rinoa - to watch over her, speak to her, and refuse emotional withdrawal despite her unresponsiveness - represents a choice made in the absence of agency over outcome. Nothing about the plot changes. Rinoa remains unconscious. Time continues forward.

What changes is Squall’s relationship to inevitability.

This shift is reinforced during the space rescue sequence. Rinoa is drifting away, oxygen is limited, and the physical constraints of space impose strict boundaries. Squall’s pursuit is a huge turning point for his character - an absolute refusal to remain detached from it any longer. The attempt itself carries meaning regardless of success.

In both cases, Final Fantasy VIII emphasises that emotional choice operates independently of narrative causality. Squall does not change what is happening - he changes how he participates in what is happening.

Within a deterministic world, emotional commitment becomes the primary form of agency available.

Love as the Only Variable

Within the rigid structure of fate, love emerges as the only element not governed by inheritance or time.

Love does not exist in Final Fantasy VIII as a force that alters history. Time compression still occurs. Memory still fades. Separation remains unavoidable. The game is explicit about this - no romantic connection prevents catastrophe or guarantees permanence.

What love changes is experience.

Rinoa consistently chooses emotional presence. She encourages connection, refuses withdrawal, and remains engaged even when she herself becomes a source of danger due to her sorceress powers. Her willingness to remain open does not resolve the larger conflict, but it resists emotional erasure.

Squall, in turn, chooses involvement over isolation, despite knowing that attachment does not protect against loss. These choices do not alter destiny, but they reshape the internal landscape through which destiny is encountered.

Love introduces variability into the meaning of the situation, but not the outcome.

Two characters may face the same destiny, but they do not experience it in the same way.

So… What Is Love For?

Within this framework, Final Fantasy VIII offers a restrained answer.

Love is not salvation.
Love does not break fate.
Love does not guarantee permanence.

Instead, love provides significance.

It gives texture to moments that would otherwise collapse into inevitability. It allows recognition across memory loss, distance, and time - even when continuity cannot be assured.

Final Fantasy VIII offers a careful, unsentimental conclusion.

Choice does not matter because it can change destiny - it matters because it determines how destiny is lived.

Characters cannot choose their endings, but they can choose whether to remain emotionally present as they approach them.

In a universe where the future already exists, freedom is found in choosing to participate in a meaningful way.

The journey is more important than the destination.

Final Fantasy VIII ultimately suggests that if destiny cannot be changed, choice still matters - not because it saves the world, but because it ensures the path toward the inevitable…is not a lonely one.

But two very different stories, Apple’s Severance and my graphic novel Rid of You, challenge that assumption by exploring what happens when memory is no longer reliable.

In Severance, the self is deliberately divided; in Rid of You, memory becomes fluid under supernatural pressures.

However, both raise the same compelling question: if memory fractures, does love fracture with it - or does something deeper endure?

Divided Selves and Emergent Connection

In Severance, workers undergo a procedure that splits consciousness into two separate identities. The “innie” version has no personal history to draw from, yet meaningful bonds still begin to form inside the vacuum.

These connections develop not through shared past but through present-tense humanity - trust, vulnerability, recognition.

The limitation, however, is structural: love can spark within the fracture, but cannot be fully realised until the divided person becomes whole again. Severance suggests that while love can appear in the absence of memory, it needs continuity of self to endure.

Shifting Memory and Persistent Emotion

Rid of You treats memory as something porous rather than neatly severed. Characters experience partial recollection, emotional echoes, and instinctive attachment that survives even when the story behind those feelings is lost.

Here, memory does not dictate love so much as filter it. The emotional truth remains constant even when the narrative around it slips.

The story leans toward the idea that connection can outlast the structures meant to contain or suppress it - that recognition can persist beneath the ebb and flow of memory.

The Emotional Cost of Forgetting

Both narratives emphasise the strain created when memory and feeling fall out of alignment.

Characters experience longing without explanation, affection without context, or trust undermined by gaps in continuity. Relationships become asymmetrical and uncertain; no one is entirely sure what is real or what has simply been misplaced.

Yet despite this instability, the impulse to connect does not disappear. What is lost cognitively resurfaces emotionally. Love persists in incomplete form, even when the mind fails to support it.

Love Beyond Cognition

Taken together, Severance and Rid of You suggest that love may not live primarily in memory at all. Memory can reinforce or contextualise connection, but it may not be the mechanism that generates it.

Both stories gesture toward a deeper layer of selfhood: a pre-rational, intuitive form of recognition that continues even when history is broken.

It may be sensible to call this underlying layer as an essence beyond the physical - not as a supernatural assertion, but as a metaphor for the durable core of identity that sustains meaning when cognition falters. It is the part of us that knows, even when the mind forgets.

So….can Love Survive Severance?

In Severance, love gestures toward something deeper than memory, though it cannot fully take root while the self remains divided. In Rid of You, the emotional bond runs deeper than simple recollection, surfacing even when memory falters. Rather than arriving at the same conclusion, both narratives approach the same idea from different angles:

Love endures not because memory preserves it, but because something beneath memory carries it forward.

Maybe… something like the soul.

At its core, Attack on Titan is more than a story about monsters and war…it’s about inheritance.

Not of wealth, not of legacy, but of wounds. Of ideology, guilt, and memory passed down like heirlooms too heavy to carry and too sacred to throw away.

Across its four seasons, Hajime Isayama’s masterwork explores how generations inherit the pain of those before them. Children are born into roles they did not choose, indoctrinated into wars they never started, and punished for crimes committed long before they drew breath. They are heirs to an unrelenting cycle: of vengeance, of fear, of believing that the only way to change the world is to destroy it.

From Eren and Zeke Jaeger, to Reiner Braun and Gabi - each major character embodies this struggle, wrestling with the traumas of their predecessors while perpetuating new ones. Grisha Jaeger’s obsessive need for redemption becomes the burden his sons cannot shake. Marley’s dehumanising propaganda poisons its own children against themselves. The Titans themselves are monstrous symbols of what’s passed down: power, memory, and suffering - each generation quite literally consuming the last.

And so, Attack on Titan becomes a generational tragedy disguised as a war epic. A story about the cages we’re born into - and the blood we spill trying to escape them.

In this article, we’ll look at how Attack on Titan unpacks the sins of the father - how its characters are shaped by intergenerational trauma, and whether, in a world built on memory and myth, any of them can truly break free.

The Cycle of Inheritance

In Attack on Titan, the most dangerous thing a person can inherit isn’t a Titan power, it’s a worldview.

From the first episode to the final scene, the story returns again and again to the idea that the world is shaped not by individuals acting freely, but by generations trapped in a long, bloody chain reaction. Ideologies, traumas, and hatreds are passed down like sacred texts. Every character is born into a narrative written long before they arrived, and most never realise they’ve inherited a script until it’s too late.

This is not a world of blank slates. It’s a world where the sins of the father are etched into the bones of the child.

History as Curse

In Eldian culture, the past is inescapable. The sins of Ymir Fritz - real or manufactured - become the basis for centuries of guilt and persecution. In Marley, children are taught that their very blood is cursed. This is internalised shame on a national scale: to be Eldian is to be inherently dangerous, inherently guilty. Even if you’re innocent, your ancestors were not…and that is enough to condemn you.

And so the story begins in a world where guilt is inherited, and punishment is perpetual.

The Founding Titan: Memory Made Flesh

Nowhere is this theme more literal than in the Titan powers themselves. To inherit a Titan is not only to gain power, it is to gain memory. Each new holder absorbs fragments of those who came before them. Their voices, their visions, their choices. In this way, the past isn’t just remembered, it is relived.

When Eren inherits the Founding Titan, he also inherits a history he never lived through, and a fate he cannot avoid. The story’s most haunting twist is that Eren’s rebellion - the thing that made him feel most free - was itself predetermined. The sins of the father we’re more than passed down, they were replayed.

Grisha and the Broken Chain

Grisha Jaeger is the clearest embodiment of inherited trauma turned radical ideology. Raised in a brutalised Eldian ghetto, haunted by his sister’s death, and indoctrinated into a revolutionary cause, Grisha believes he can break the cycle by fighting it head-on. But all he does is perpetuate it.

In trying to give his sons a better world, he shackles them with the same impossible burden. Zeke is crushed by Grisha’s idealism and betrays him to Marley. Eren, by contrast, becomes a vessel for it. Grisha’s final words - “You have to stop Eren” - reveal his horror at realising too late what he has created. His attempt to pass on freedom has, ironically, created a monster.

Children of War

The story’s young warriors: Reiner, Annie, Bertholdt, Gabi - are literal child soldiers, moulded into tools by their state. They are taught not only to kill, but to believe in the righteousness of doing so. Gabi’s early fanaticism, for example, is not her own, it’s inherited. It’s what she’s been told about Eldians, about devils, about her duty. Her violence is born of history, not hatred.

But history lies. And when these characters confront the truth, when they realise that the people they’ve been taught to kill are just like them - it breaks them. Reiner’s split personality. Gabi’s breakdown. Falco’s compassion. These are not simply signs of guilt. They are signs of inherited myths beginning to unravel.

The Cycle Tightens

The brilliance of Attack on Titan is how it presents this cycle not as a passive backdrop, but as an active force. The world itself is designed to perpetuate trauma. The Titans destroy cities. The survivors raise walls. Fear breeds violence. Violence breeds fear. Every generation builds their worldview on the ashes of the last, convinced that this time, the war will end with them.

But it never does.

Because until someone chooses not to pass the pain forward, the cycle continues.

Inheritors of Pain

If Attack on Titan is about the sins of the past, then its characters are the children forced to live in the ruins. Each major figure is born into a war they didn’t start, shaped by ideologies they didn’t choose, and ultimately faced with a singular question: do you carry the pain forward - or do you let it end with you?

Let’s examine five of the most thematically rich characters, each representing a different facet of that inheritance.

Eren Jaeger: The Child Who Became the Curse

Eren begins as the most straightforward protagonist in fiction: a boy who wants freedom. But that dream slowly curdles into something else - something monstrous. He inherits not just the Titan powers, but the traumas and memories that shaped them. The moment he sees Grisha’s memories, and then sees his own influence inside them, he realises he was never free. He was always part of the cycle.

What makes Eren’s arc so tragic isn’t that he becomes the villainit’s that he does so in pursuit of liberation. He wants to break the cage, but he does it by becoming the bars. He believes his genocide will “save” his friends, will end the violence - but by embracing the sins of the past, he ensures they’ll echo forever.

He is both victim and executioner. The boy who inherited the fire - and chose to let it burn the world.

Zeke Jaeger: The Betrayer Who Meant to Save Everyone

Zeke is the ultimate product of generational damage. Raised by radicalised parents who projected their cause onto him, Zeke doesn’t just break under the weight - he rejects it. He betrays Grisha and Dina to Marley, an act of survival wrapped in misplaced morality.

Yet Zeke doesn’t walk away unscathed. He becomes a tragic mirror of his father: obsessed with his version of salvation. Where Grisha wanted revolution, Zeke wants sterilisation. If Eldians can’t be free, they shouldn’t suffer, he reasons. His euthanasia plan is chilling precisely because it’s so gentle - he’s not trying to punish, he’s trying to end the pain.

But like all inheritors in AoT, he’s blind to the fact that his “solution” is another form of control. He doesn’t trust the next generation to do better. He doesn’t believe healing is possible. In that sense, Zeke’s greatest wound isn’t betrayal - it’s despair.

Grisha Jaeger: The Revolutionary Who Became the Catalyst

Grisha is the literal origin point for both Eren and Zeke’s trauma - and the bridge between Marley and Paradis. After losing his sister to state violence, he dedicates his life to Eldian restoration. But his radicalism becomes a burden he hands down in two directions.

To Zeke, he’s an overbearing ideologue. To Eren, he’s a remorseful but manipulative father. Either way, Grisha sees his children not as individuals, but as vessels to finish what he started. His guilt over failing Zeke drives him to pin all hope on Eren - and in doing so, he repeats the very cycle he swore to break.

Grisha’s tragedy is that he knows he’s repeating history. But he convinces himself this time will be different. It never is.

Reiner Braun: The Soldier Who Couldn’t Carry It

Reiner is arguably the most emotionally devastated character in the series. As a child, he volunteers to become a Warrior for Marley in the hopes of proving his worth. What he receives instead is a lifetime of cognitive dissonance, fractured identity, and suicidal guilt.

Reiner doesn’t just carry the weight of his fatherland - he carries the faces of the people he’s hurt. He becomes the perfect embodiment of Attack on Titan’s central question: what happens when you believe in a cause, only to realise it was built on lies?

His constant psychological breakdowns - the dual personas, the dissociative fugues, the attempts to kill himself - aren’t weakness. They’re symptoms of a child crushed beneath history. Reiner is a product of war, and unlike Eren or Zeke, he doesn’t pretend otherwise. He hates himself because he understands the cycle - and he doesn’t know how to stop it.

Gabi Braun: The Inheritor Who Woke Up

Gabi begins the story as a reflection of early Eren - brash, ideological, and utterly convinced of her moral clarity. She’s a child trained to hate her own people, to see herself as the “good” Eldian, and to believe the outside world is full of devils.

Then she kills Sasha. And is taken in by Sasha’s family.

It’s this moment - when she’s shown compassion by the people she’s been taught to despise - that cracks her worldview. Unlike many characters in AoT, Gabi’s growth is not triggered by violence, but by grace. She starts to see - not just others, but herself.

Gabi is proof that the cycle can be broken, not through power, but through empathy. She’s the hope the story desperately needs.

Each of these characters carries their father’s (or forefather’s) sin in different ways. Some become monsters. Some become martyrs. Some wake up.

But none walk away unchanged.

Mikasa Ackerman: The Silent Inheritor

Mikasa is one of the quietest characters in Attack on Titan, but her story speaks volumes. She doesn’t inherit a Titan or a cause - she inherits a burden. Her clan is near-extinct. Her childhood is shattered by violence. And from that moment on, she anchors herself to Eren - not just out of love, but out of survival.

Her Ackerman bloodline gives her strength, but it’s also a cage. As Levi and Kenny both discover, Ackermans are conditioned - perhaps even genetically predisposed - to protect. It raises a haunting question: is Mikasa’s loyalty her own, or inherited instinct?

Throughout the series, she rarely chooses for herself. She follows Eren, protects him, kills for him. But in the final moments - when she makes the impossible decision to kill him - she finally acts on her own volition. Not as an Ackerman, not as a soldier, not even as a lover - but as a person.

Her arc doesn’t reject inheritance. It transcends it. She carries everything Eren gave her - the scarf, the pain, the love - but ultimately chooses not to be defined by it. Mikasa is what it looks like to carry memory without letting it control you.

Historia Reiss: The Heir Who Refused the Throne

Historia is born into royalty, yet raised in shadows. Her entire life is shaped by secrets and shame. First discarded by her noble family, then used as a pawn by the military, she’s told again and again what she should be: a weapon, a queen, a symbol of purity.

Like many characters in AoT, Historia is denied agency. But unlike Eren or Zeke, she doesn’t respond with grand plans or rebellion. She responds with quiet defiance.

When Rod Reiss urges her to become a vessel for the Founding Titan - and continue the memory-altering cycle of control - she refuses. She breaks the syringe, slams her father to the ground, and makes a choice that is both small and monumental: “I’ll be the one to end it.”

Later, her role becomes more ambiguous. The choice to bear a child for the sake of the state - potentially coerced, possibly strategic - adds another layer to her arc. Is she complicit now, or simply surviving? That uncertainty is the point. Historia’s story is about the impossible choices women often face in patriarchal, lineage-obsessed systems. Sometimes surviving is a kind of rebellion.

She doesn’t end the cycle. But she puts a crack in it.

Together, Mikasa and Historia add emotional and political nuance to the theme of inheritance. They show us that trauma isn’t always loud. Sometimes it lingers in silence, obedience, and forced roles. But even within those confines, there are moments of power - choices that ripple outward, challenging the weight of history with something radically simple: a decision of their own.

Legacy and Memory as Weapons

In Attack on Titan, memory is more than remembrance - it's warfare.

Most stories treat memory as something personal: the echo of a lost loved one, a lesson learned. But in Isayama’s world, memory is systemic. It is deliberately curated, distorted, and weaponised - by bloodlines, governments, and even time itself. History is not only told by the victors; it is engineered to control those who come next.

The Titans, ironically, are the least monstrous examples of this. The real horror lies in how memory becomes ideology.

The Founding Titan: Power Through Perception

The Founding Titan’s ability to rewrite memory turns truth into an instrument of subjugation. King Fritz used it to make the Eldians on Paradis forget their past entirely, creating a peaceful illusion within the Walls while the world beyond still burned with hatred. He didn't just imprison them physically - he caged their minds.

This is a chilling metaphor for how propaganda functions. What you remember defines what you believe. And what you believe shapes how you act. In this way, history isn’t the past - it’s the script for the future.

Eren, when he inherits this power, initially seems poised to break the cycle. But he ends up using memory just as selectively, orchestrating events and manipulating people into playing out the roles he believes are necessary. Like the monarchs before him, he controls through knowledge withheld.

Titan Inheritance: Cannibalising the Past

The act of inheriting a Titan is viscerally symbolic: to gain power, you must consume the previous holder. It’s a literal devouring of the past, one that fuses your identity with theirs. You don’t just inherit strength - you inherit burdens, trauma, and choices you never made.

This consumption of legacy is at the heart of the show’s horror. The Nine Titans are passed down like dynastic curses, each one carrying the weight of centuries. They are not gifts. They are burdens. And those who inherit them are expected to carry on not just the fight - but the ideology.

Eren inherits Grisha’s pain. Armin inherits Bertholdt’s dreams. Zeke inherits Tom Ksaver’s nihilism. These are not clean slates - they’re haunted ones.

Historia and the Royal Bloodline: Breeding Legacy

Even outside of the Titan system, Attack on Titan critiques the way societies weaponise legacy through control of bloodlines. Historia is pressured to bear a child not because she wants to, but because her royal lineage makes her womb politically valuable. Her blood becomes a tool. Her body becomes a future.

This is the brutal logic of hereditary power structures: the past determines your worth, and your role is to reproduce that past - literally. Historia’s story is one of quiet horror, showing how lineage and memory intertwine not just in ideology, but in flesh.

The Danger of Knowing Too Much

Isayama also explores the psychological cost of memory. As the series progresses, those who “know too much” often fall apart. Reiner’s breakdowns, Zeke’s numbness, Eren’s radicalisation - these are not accidents. They are the side effects of seeing the truth too clearly.

In this world, ignorance is protection. Armin’s childlike dream of the sea is only beautiful before he learns what lies beyond it. Once he knows, it’s poisoned.

Eren’s descent begins the moment he inherits Grisha’s memories. It deepens when he realises that he has always been a part of them. He loses his freedom not through force, but through knowledge.

When Memory Becomes a Weapon, Is Forgetting the Only Escape?

The final irony of Attack on Titan is that the only way to “break the cycle” might be to erase it. Eren’s genocide is not just an act of war - it’s an attempt to burn memory out of the world. His end goal is a world where no one remembers Titans. No one remembers the hatred.

But even in the final pages, we see this dream crumble. The tree reappears. The cycle hints at returning.

Because memory is never truly gone.

It sleeps, and then it wakes.

Can the Cycle Be Broken?

Attack on Titan is a series defined by repetition - of war, ideology, grief, and sacrifice. Each generation inherits the sins of the last, forced to reckon with crimes they didn’t commit and ideals they didn’t choose. But as the final chapters approach, a pressing question rises like smoke over a battlefield:

Is it possible to break the cycle? Or is it already too late?

Eren’s Answer: Annihilation as Liberation

For Eren Jaeger, the answer is terrifyingly simple: if there’s no one left to carry the hate, the cycle ends.

His plan - the Rumbling - is a catastrophic final solution. He isn’t just trying to protect Paradis. He’s trying to erase history itself by removing those who remember it. “If you want to be free,” he seems to reason, “then everything that binds you to the past must die with it.”

But this is not freedom. It’s erasure. It’s a false peace built on silence and ash. In the end, Eren isn’t breaking the cycle - he’s continuing it at maximum volume. His genocide is not a clean slate. It is another chapter in the same story, written in blood.

His decision exposes the flaw in inherited trauma: if pain is all you’ve ever known, you might come to believe that pain is the only way to be heard.

Gabi and Falco: Empathy as Rebellion

In contrast, Attack on Titan offers smaller, quieter answers - none more powerful than Gabi and Falco.

These two children, raised in the heart of Marleyan indoctrination, begin as mirrors of their enemies. Gabi is brash, zealous, and convinced of her superiority. Falco is gentler, but just as loyal to the system. And yet, through their exposure to the people of Paradis - especially through Sasha’s grieving family - they begin to see the humanity in “the devils.”

This shift is seismic. Not because it’s loud, but because it is new. Gabi’s apology, her horror, her slow unlearning - this is what it looks like when the next generation refuses to carry their ancestors’ hate. Falco’s empathy, his gentleness even in war, shows that love and understanding are not naïve - they are acts of resistance.

These two don’t break the system through force. They loosen its grip through compassion.

Mikasa: Love as a Final Act

Mikasa’s final decision is perhaps the most emotionally devastating moment in the series. After years of devotion, after enduring betrayal, distance, and silence, she is the one who ends Eren’s life. Not out of hatred - but out of love.

She doesn't kill him to save the world. She kills him because he asks her to. Because she knows it must be done.

It’s a complicated act. It is both mercy and murder, both goodbye and release. But it is also a turning point. In choosing to act with clarity, not ideology - in refusing to follow inherited duty or genetic loyalty - Mikasa does what generations before her could not.

She ends the story.

With love. Not vengeance.

The Final Symbol: A Tree, Reborn

And yet… even after Eren’s death, the series refuses to grant us certainty.

In the final pages, a new tree appears - strikingly similar to the one where Ymir’s powers first began. A young boy, nameless, curious, enters its shadow.

It’s ambiguous. Ominous. Beautiful.

Does this mean the cycle is beginning again? Or is it merely the memory of what was?

Perhaps Attack on Titan doesn’t give us a definitive answer because there isn’t one. Breaking the cycle isn’t an ending - it’s a constant choice. Made again and again. By individuals. In small moments.

The Answer Isn’t a Titan. It’s a Question.

The cycle breaks when someone decides not to kill. When they choose not to believe everything they were told. When they choose empathy over indoctrination, responsibility over revenge.

But this choice isn’t permanent. It must be made repeatedly, across generations.

And maybe that’s the point.

Attack on Titan isn’t about a world saved. It’s about a world fought for. Not through might, but through meaning. Through memory. Through mercy.

Conclusion: We Don’t Choose What We Inherit

We don’t choose what we inherit.

Not our history. Not our blood. Not the pain etched into our culture, our family, our name.

In Attack on Titan, every character begins life in a prison built by those who came before them - walled in by fear, duty, ideology, or fate. The show asks: what happens when a generation is given nothing but trauma, and asked to build a future from its ruins?

Some fight. Some follow. Some become monsters.

But in the final reckoning, what Attack on Titan seems to suggest is that cycles don’t break all at once. Not with a battle. Not even with a death. They break in moments. In choices. In the quiet courage to see someone - truly see them - as more than what the past says they should be.

Eren’s path is the loudest, but it’s not the most important. The real hope of the series lies in Gabi’s remorse, in Armin’s mercy, in Mikasa’s farewell kiss. It lies in the idea that healing is not forgetting - it’s remembering differently. Carrying the past not as a curse, but as a lesson.

Because the truth is, we’re all inheritors. Of stories. Of wounds. Of worlds made before us.

But we are also authors. Of new ones.

And maybe that’s Attack on Titan’s final message: You may not choose what you're given. But you can choose what you give.

I had the pleasure of stumbling onto a gem of a game—GRIS. What I expected to be a brief distraction turned out to be one of the most moving gaming experiences I’ve had in a while.

But, what is…GRIS?

The name GRIS means “grey” in Spanish, a nod to both the game’s opening palette and the liminal emotional space its heroine inhabits. As you explore, new colours slowly return to the world, each tied to a stage of healing.

The game is short—around three to four hours—but its blend of elegant mechanics, stunning art direction, and evocative music has made it one of the most acclaimed indie titles of the past decade.

What it’s like to play GRIS

A side-scrolling platformer with no dialogue, combat, or fail states, it’s deceptively simple on the surface. But beneath that surface lies a profound comment on grief, loss, and transformation - delivered through movement, colour and sound.

It doesn’t ask much of you mechanically, but it asks everything emotionally. Each step, each jump, each quiet moment is steeped in metaphor, encouraging you to reflect not only on what the character is going through, but what you may be carrying yourself.

In this article, I’ll explore how GRIS handles grief, not just as a narrative device, but as a lived process. I’ll look at the game’s elegantly minimalist mechanics and how they guide without instruction, challenge without punishment, and gently reveal growth through gameplay. Finally, I’ll celebrate the breathtaking art direction that brings this world to life—through colour, animation, and composition that speaks louder than words ever could.

This is more than a game….it’s a visual poem. A requiem for what was, and a quiet, hopeful hymn for what might still be.

Grief as a Playable Emotion

GRIS doesn’t rely on exposition to explain what its protagonist is going through. Instead, it externalises her emotional journey through visual metaphor and gameplay design—transforming inner turmoil into shifting landscapes, dissolving architecture, and moments of suspended movement. Grief is not once referenced; but you can feel it echoing through the core of the visuals.

The game loosely follows the five stages of grief, though not in a rigid, textbook way. Each chapter introduces a new hue—red, green, blue, yellow, and finally, full colour—paired with corresponding emotional states: anger, fear, sorrow, hope, acceptance.

The red chapter, with its howling winds and unstable footing, feels aggressive and disorienting. The blue chapter pulls you underwater, into a slow, dreamlike space where everything is muffled and heavy. The green chapter introduces gravity-defying trees and whimsical traversal—a lightness that arrives like a long exhale after sadness.

At the centre of it all is the recurring statue of the woman—shattered, eroded, almost mythic. As you collect fragments and slowly reconstruct her form, you begin to understand: she’s not just a mother figure, or a memory. She’s the part of yourself that grief has taken. And piece by piece, you reclaim her.

Simple Mechanics, Intricate Design

At first glance, GRIS feels almost too simple. There are no enemies. No death. No traditional puzzles in the usual sense. You move, you jump, and occasionally interact with the world around you. But beneath that softness is a tightly crafted structure—one that creates the feeling of being lost, while quietly guiding you every step of the way.

The game offers no map, no UI, no on-screen instructions. You’re given space to wander, to drift, to explore without pressure. Yet somehow, you rarely lose your way. The level design is fluid and intuitive, using light, movement, architecture, and music to gently pull you forward. A shaft of sunlight might draw your eye to a crumbling ledge. A fluttering flock of birds might signal the path ahead. These cues are never intrusive. They simply exist—placed with care, waiting for you to notice.

Each new ability unfolds seamlessly into the world. Turning to stone to resist howling winds. Gliding through the air. Swimming through vast, silent waters. Singing to restore life. These moments are paced with intention, tied not just to progression but to emotional shifts. It never feels like you’re unlocking power for its own sake.

What’s striking is how gently the game treats you. You can’t fail. You won’t die. The challenge comes not from overcoming obstacles, but from understanding how to navigate them with new awareness. It reflects a deeper truth: grief doesn’t require mastery. It asks for patience, resilience, and the courage to keep going—even when you don’t fully understand where you’re headed.

The Elegance of Art Direction

From the very first frame, GRIS announces itself as something crafted with extraordinary care. Its world is hand-painted, almost translucent—built from delicate lines, fluid animation, and a colour palette that feels as emotionally alive as the protagonist herself. There’s a sense of precision in every brushstroke, but it never feels clinical.

The environments themselves feel like illustrations caught in motion—ethereal but grounded. Crumbling temples, swirling storms, endless staircases rising toward the sky. Some areas feel almost sacred, others quietly desolate. Every location carries a specific emotional weight, often enhanced by the way it sounds as much as how it looks. Sometimes the space is wide and open, other times narrow and confining, as if the world itself is breathing with you—expanding and contracting with your state of mind.

Silence plays a vital role too. There are long stretches where nothing happens, visually or sonically—and that stillness hits just as hard as the game’s sweeping musical crescendos. The score, composed by Berlinist, is haunting and minimal, rising and falling with your journey. It feels less like background music and more like memory made audible—shimmering at the edges, never quite resolving.

In GRIS, art direction isn’t just about beauty. It’s emotional architecture. Every colour, every shape, every sound exists in service of what the character—and the player—might be feeling in that moment.

A Game That Understands

GRIS doesn’t shout.

What makes it so powerful is how much trust it places in the player. Trust that you’ll notice the way a shadow moves, or the way colour returns to the sky. Trust that you’ll connect with a character who never speaks, because her silence feels familiar.

By the time you reach the final moments, there’s no grand twist, no triumph waiting at the end. What you find instead is a sense of release. A calm.

GRIS lingers long after the credits, and you realise that healing doesn’t erase pain—it just transforms it into something new.

In a media landscape saturated with time-travel stories, DARK stands alone: a tightly-wound, ruthlessly efficient puzzle box where every moment matters, every character is a thread in a cosmic tapestry, and no scene is wasted.

It achieves what few shows ever do - marrying high-concept sci-fi with raw emotional truth, all without sacrificing clarity or cohesion.

From its haunting score to its restrained cinematography and soul-piercing performances, DARK delivers an experience as intellectually satisfying as it is emotionally devastating. It dares to ask questions about fate, grief, determinism, and love — not with lazy exposition, but with elegance and restraint. As both a storyteller and a long-time fan, I found myself continually struck by how DARK echoes the emotional and philosophical themes I explore in my own graphic novel trilogy, RID OF YOU. In the transition from manga to anime, DanDaDan has managed to preserve—and even amplify—its signature chaos, charm, and emotional resonance.

Yukinobu Tatsu’s original manga made waves for its genre-defying blend of supernatural horror, sci-fi lunacy, heartfelt character drama, and high-octane comedy. Now, with the anime adaptation in full swing, those narrative and artistic choices are being reinterpreted in motion—and the results are both faithful and thrillingly fresh.

The anime doesn’t just bring the manga’s iconic moments to life; it reimagines them with dynamic animation, voice acting, sound design, and a direction that heightens the emotional and visual impact.

I found myself scrolling through the PlayStation Store, looking for something new to lose myself in. You know that feeling—you’re not just looking for entertainment; you’re looking for something that might mean something. Nier: Automata had been sitting in the back of my mind for years. It had this reputation for being different.

People didn’t just say it was good; they spoke about it like it was art, like it could hit you somewhere deeper than most games even attempt.

I was ready to finally see what that was about. But then something strange happened.

Scrolling through the bundles and sales, I noticed another title tucked alongside Automata: Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139…. The name alone made me pause. It wasn’t slick or self-explanatory—it was cryptic, mathematical, almost aggressively uninterested in explaining itself. It felt like a challenge.

The art, too, was different. Bleaker. More wistful. And although the visuals didn’t look as sharp or modern as Automata's, there was something magnetic about them. Something I couldn’t define. I clicked through and found out it was part of the same universe, its story set thousands of years before Automata—not exactly a traditional prequel, but deeply connected. A hidden beginning to a story I hadn't even started yet.

On a gut feeling, I bought it. No expectations. No preparation. Just instinct.

It turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made.

Howl's Moving Castle enchants viewers with its whimsical tale of self-discovery and love amidst a backdrop of magic and war. The film follows Sophie, a young woman transformed into an elderly crone by a witch's curse, as she seeks refuge in the titular moving castle belonging to the enigmatic wizard Howl. Their journey intertwines with themes of identity, acceptance, and the transformative power of love, as they navigate a world torn apart by conflict.

In Spirited Away, director Hayao Miyazaki crafts a surreal odyssey through a spirit-infested bathhouse, where a young girl named Chihiro must work to rescue her parents and find her way back home. Your Name enchants with its breathtaking animation and evocative imagery, as director Makoto Shinkai infuses each frame with a sense of ethereal beauty and emotion. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the tranquil beauty of rural Japan, every scene is meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of wonder and longing, complementing the film's themes of love, fate, and connection.

Final thoughts

Ultimately, all three stand as shining examples of the fantasy romance genre in anime, each offering a unique blend of compelling storytelling, rich character development, and breathtaking visuals. Through their exploration of themes of love, identity, and the human experience, these films captivate audiences with their beauty, imagination, and sheer cinematic brilliance, solidifying their place as timeless classics in the world of anime.

Miyazaki is undoubtedly a master storyteller but it’s Shinkai’s Your Name that holds a special place in my heart. What sets it apart is its remarkable ability to evoke the strongest emotion, surpassing any other anime I've experienced.

From its unassuming and somewhat generic setup, Your Name masterfully lulls you into a false sense of 'meh’ before completely flipping the script at the mid-point - a very bold choice in an age of short attention. And from here the tension only escalates throughout the remaining plot, leaving audiences praying for a pay-off that will resolve the desperate discomfort.

As the mysteries unravel and the stakes heighten, the film delivers a cathartic and emotionally resonant conclusion that lingers long after the credits roll.

It's not just the captivating story or stunning animation that makes Your Name my favourite; its innovative storytelling, unforgettable characters, and profound emotional impact, Your Name solidifies its place as a timeless classic in the anime pantheon.

Adding to the tapestry

Fundamentally, these films all have one key common trait: they define a part of the human experience that almost everyone can relate to - because sometimes romance itself can quite literally be a fantasy-like experience.

And this is why I decided to write the story of Rid of You - which features two people who fall in love from completely different worlds, and driven by opposing motives: one wants to let go of the past and escape their lives, whilst the other seeks an external force to hold on to, and make their fate more bearable. A perfect tension.

I’d originally written and illustrated the entire 200-page graphic novel for a single book release. But as I reviewed and edited the final art, I realised the story had much more potential, and so made the decision to release Rid of You as three chapters:

• Season 1: The Spark

• Season 2: Unbalanced

• Season 3: Into the Starsea

And whilst the overall story, themes and character arcs remain similar, each book is now a self-contained story, as well as adding to the larger story tapestry.
